ISHS-IPS one-day joint symposium: Principles and processes in conserving and restoring peatlands and organic soils use

Tuesday, June 13th, 2023

Objective: To present the latest developments about principles and processes in conserving and restoring peatlands and organic soils use. Following the RE3 morning plenaries, a first session will address the processes involved in cultivation on organic soils: degradation (wind erosion, drainage and compaction), conservation and reconstruction. The second session will focus on peatland restoration application and results at the industry scale. Finally, the last session will present data supporting the responsible management nature and circularity of growing media use.

FORUM: UN Decade of Restoration: Advancing the Canadian agenda

Thursday, June 15th, 2023

Summary:

The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) calls to action to “prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean.” Through ambitious ecological restoration goals that include nature-based solutions for climate adaptation, and the support of human livelihood, we can ultimately achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Canada needs to be at the forefront of this movement.

Celebrating the launch of this UN Decade and under the themes Reclamation, Restoration and Rewilding of the RE3 Conference, this high-profile event promises to enlighten and inspire. We all have the capacity to contribute. Constraints to ecosystem restoration and priorities need to be identified and actions implemented for the Canadian agenda.

A high segment Plenary Session (in English) will convene experts from high level global secretariats (IUCN, UN Decade, CBD, UNEP, Ramsar, SERI, IPCC) to present short allocutions about how ecological restoration, rewilding, and reclamation can assist in reaching their specific international mission goals. Canadian politicians are also invited to interact with participants.

Immediately following the plenary speakers, we invite interested conference delegates to join a forum where small participatory groups will discuss the role of ecosystem restoration in the Canadian agenda, especially in the context of both climate mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity conservation (Target 2 of CBD). Forum tables will be organised by themes. Please, do register under which theme you would be interested to participate in the discussions:

  • Forest Ecosystems
  • Wetlands, freshwater bodies
  • Peatlands
  • Urban areas
  • Agricultural ecosystems, farmlands, grasslands, shrublands
  • Mines, borrow pits, road impacts
  • Coastal zones and oceans
  • Tundra - Arctic

Although most of the discussions will be held in English, there will be the possibility of grouping the participants around a French-speaking table as well.

A document (report) on the results of the discussions will emerge from this forum, in English and in French.

Women in Restoration Luncheon

The Women in Restoration Luncheon will highlight the contributions of remarkable female scientists or practitioners involved in reclamation, restoration or rewilding. Their efforts have been targeted to better understand the ecosystems and how to restore for future generations.
